Mateusz Piesiak

I was born in 1996 in Wrocław, Poland. Currently, I am studying Automatics and Robotics at Wroclaw University of Science and Technology.

Ever since I can remember, I have been interested in nature. It allows me to calm down and break away from the hustle and bustle of the city. In the beginning, I used to wander outdoors only with my binocs. In 2008 I got my first camera. When, a year later, I have arrived in Biebrza wetlands, I felt as if the marshes were drawing me in, and I have gotten infected with an incurable disease that was a wildlife photography.

The main subjects of my photography are birds. Wildlife photography requires a lot of patience and preparation, e.g. building hides. Often, after many hours spent sitting in my hiding place, I come back home with an empty memory card. However, when I finally manage to take the desired photo, it compensates all the effort. In wildlife photography, I mostly like the moment, when I am hidden in my look-out, like a spectator sitting in a first row in a theatre, I can admire an incredible spectacle of nature, that is played out around. It is the highest honour to be able to sneak into the world of animals and share its beauty with others.

My works have been published in Polish and foreign magazines, including: „BBC Wildlife Magazine”, „The Guardian”. In 2011, in London, I was awarded the title of „BBC Young Wildlife Photographer of the Year”. I have also managed to win few photo contests, such as: „BBC Wildlife Photographer of the Year”, „Kuwait Grand Photography Contest”, „Siena International Photography Awards”, „Oasis Photo Contest”, „Epson International Pano Awards”, „Memorial Maria Luisa”, „Asferico Photo Contest”, “BBC International Garden Photographer of the Year”, “iPhone Photography Awards”. In 2016, my photographs were displayed in international photographic fair Photokina in Cologne.
