About the exhibition

“Studium przypadku” (Case Study)

[…] In her project, Katarzyna Łata takes on the role of a researcher who processes data by recalling records from her own life, visually captured in multiplied images. She seeks equivalents to express her own experiences. She balances between the causal, practically atavistic reflexes that guide her life choices, and a conscious formation of them. She carries out a diagnosis of herself, on a psychological and artistic level, setting herself the task of discovering inner landscapes and transposing them into photographic images embedded in structures derived from the reality around her. About the exhibition

Algeria remains undiscovered, which makes it precious and mythical at the same time, similar to a philosopher’s stone. It is an elusive muse for both its children and foreigners. No one can resist her allure. In order to reach her, one must show humility. Those who look down on her will lose her from sight. They will only see their own arrogance.

Yasmina Khadra, an excerpt from an essay for the book “Deglet Nour”

Tytus Grodzicki first travelled to Algeria as a teenage boy. He spent over a year there. Memories and stories from that time followed him into adulthood. Photographs came a little later. Tytus Grodzicki returned to Algeria 30 years later to find familiar places and dear people, but also to look at Algeria with the eye of a documentary filmmaker.

“Deglet Nour” means the most perfect dates, and literally a “finger of light”. It is the light that guides the photographer and leads through the photographs. It has produced a story from a country that most of us know nothing about. We find everyday life without unnecessary emotions and events that would catch the viewer’s attention. The author is near, framing slightly from below, remaining invisible to those being photographed. He notices nameless characters: boys playing football, men hugging, arguments at the market or a couple spending time together, as well as women whose image escapes stereotypes.

Tytus Grodzicki does not look down on Algeria. He observes her closely, recalling familiar landscapes and scenes. He patiently and distantly follows the modern world, giving a glimpse of an undiscovered Algeria.
