This exhibition houses the winning images of the photo contest Wildlife Photographer of the Year 2012, run by Natural History Museum in London and BBC Worldwide.

The Wildlife Photographer of the Year competition has been running since 1965 and now is worldwide known and valued for a wide collection of the very best nature photography. Each year the outcome of the contest is the famous exhibition that is shown all around the world, in Poland for the 11th time in a row. This year’s edition of the exhibition presents 17 categories’ winning images plus 2 special awards. The winners were selected from a field of 48,000 photographs, taken by 4,400 photographers from 98 countries.

The main purpose of the competition is to adopt the power of photography to promote the discovery, understanding and responsible enjoyment of the natural world by presenting its beauty, diversity and splendour. Therefore, each year more spectators admire much better photographs.

Perception of time and place is crucial in life. Finding the right place at the right time can decide about finding food, life partner, even about life itself or death. Photographs in this exhibition reflect all these dilemmas due to photographers’ presence in the right places at the right times. Just a few moments later or a couple of seconds earlier, these exact images would not had been captured. Life passes by very quickly. Birth, danger, struggle, survival – happens all the time, one by one. Majority of these every-day dramas is unfamiliar to us. Photographers from all around the world reveal these moments, so we can experience them and regard. Some of these moments are unexceptional; some are extraordinary. Some are uplifting; others make us think about how we affect our environment. It gives the exhibition vast educational value by displaying drama and variety of life on the Earth, thus stimulating viewers to preserve the nature in the future.

Once more in the history of the exhibition, there are also images made ​​by Polish photographers. Surprisingly both of them live in Podlasie: Cezariusz Andrejczuk from Białystok – his photograph „A movement of trees” has been commended in a category of “Botanical Realms”; whereas Bartek Kosiński from Białowieża won with his photo “Dawn Flight”, that was regarded as the best photograph of “10 years and younger” category.

Since 2004 Toruń has been one of the cities, where this exhibition is shown on its international tour. Thus, in Poland the exhibition was displayed also in Warszawa, Bielsko-Biała, Szczecin, Wrocław and Trójmiasto.

The exhibition was honoured with patronage of Minister Kultury i Dziedzictwa Narodowego (the Minister of Culture and National Heritage) and Minister Środowiska (the Minister of the Environment). Furthermore, it has been sponsored by the Izba Gospodarcza Wodociągi Polskie (Chamber of Commerce Polish Waterworks).
